My name is Boyd Travis of Jonesville, Lee County Virginia. My Amateur Radio Call Sign is N4TUX. I am currently a General Class Operator. I also was the 1st. Contact V.E. offering Amateur Radio Testing in Lee County, Virginia. I got my Novice license back in 1985. I took my 13 word per minute  code requirement code exam at Shelby, NC. ham fest and passed it there. I passed my General written exam at Gate City, VA. testing session in Gate City, Virginia. I have used and enjoyed using morse code for a couple or so years while having just a novice license but id rather use voice communications any day. I have been a  firm advocate of getting rid of the morse code requirement personally all along. Just because I had to take and pass the morse code requirements doesn't mean others should have to! It doesn't make any one person amateur radio licensed person any better than any other just because they passed morse code exam requirement. I try to enjoy the amateur radio "ham radio" service / hobby with any class license person who is nice towards me! Not acting or treating anyone with a lower class license any different. I do not look down on lower class ham radio licensed people or person's. It is not nice at all and I hate to see and hear of other licensed ham radio operators who have been treating other amateur radio operators of lower class or no code tech. ham radio operators with attitude that is not nice. I hope you can enjoy amateur radio "ham radio" service / hobby as my wife Robin and I "Boyd" do, with a nice mannerly friendly way and treatment to all not just a few according to their class of license. I have some ham friends who do like morse code and I respect them liking morse code but these friends I have that happen to like morse code do not look down upon tech. class hams.

My wife Robin Travis's call sign is W4TUX. Robin is a Technician Class Operator. Robins older call sign was KE4FFP.

I have worked for the Lee County Public School System for approximately 20 years. I permanently injured my back on the job lifting and unloading concrete picnic tables off a shipping truck. Its hard being disabled now. I can not walk or stand for more than 15 minutes at one time due to severe back pain due to this injury. I live with my loving wife "Robin" and my loving daughter "Sarah" and with my God as my strength and Savior, I will try to live and enjoy life best I can. Amateur Radio "Ham Radio" is a part of something I can do and enjoy to help me deal with this pain and injury.

One Ham Radio Related Personal Opinion or View I want to voice below:
I have passed 5 words per min. morse code exam requirement and the 13 words per min. exam. I wish however that I didn't have to go through the head ache and pain of fooling with the morse code personally. I am so glad the morse code requirement is GONE! I fully respect the Ham's who do like morse code, I want that to be perfectly clearly voiced and said! I have close friends who do love morse code and respect them and their love for morse code. But, with a giggle and a chuckle, a similar phrase said "FREE AT LAST.... FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD WE ARE FREE AT LAST"!!!!!  He He He ... ha ha ha. Thing that boils my blood is this, some not all, but some out there who like me has had to pass a dang morse code requirement has a snooty attitude that we that did pass or have had to take and pass a morse code requirement exam is better that others whom didn't. That is a bull crock! I am not one of those snooty Ham's! I treat and have fun with any class license Ham whom is nice to me, period.

What Can Amateur Radio
"Ham" Operators Do?

Ham radio operators use two-way radio stations from their homes, cars, boats and outdoors to make hundreds of friends around town and around the world. They communicate with each other using voice, computers, and Morse code. Some hams bounce their signals off the upper regions of the atmosphere, so they can talk with hams on the other side of the world. Other hams use satellites. Many use hand-held radios that fit in their pockets.

Using even the simplest of radio setups and antennas, amateurs communicate with each other for fun, during emergencies, and even in contests. They handle messages for police and other public service organizations during all kinds of emergencies including:

bulletHurricanes
bulletEarthquakes
bulletTornadoes and floods
bulletMotorist accidents
bulletFires and chemical spills
bulletSearch and rescues
